The second edition of the Capacity Building Training Programme on Value Addition of Water Hyacinth, sponsored by NETFISH-MPEDA, was successfully inaugurated at JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) on 9 June 2026.
Jointly organized by NETFISH under the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, and the Future Kerala Mission of JAIN University, Kochi, the programme aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and generate additional income for Scheduled Caste fisher-folk and allied workers through the production of value-added products using water hyacinth.
The training programme welcomed its second batch of 40 participants from Chemmanakari and commenced under the leadership of Prof. Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu, Scientific Advisor, Future Kerala Mission, and Dr. C. P. Resmi, Deputy Director, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, JAIN University, Kochi. As part of the programme, starter kits were distributed to participants by Dr. Radhakrishnan Unni, Head – Administration, Finance & Industry Engagements, JAIN University, Kochi, encouraging them to apply their newly acquired skills towards sustainable entrepreneurship.
The occasion was graced by Smt. Sangeetha N. R., State Coordinator (Kerala South), NETFISH-MPEDA, while Dr. Tom M. Joseph, Director – New Initiatives, JAIN University, Kochi, visited the programme and interacted with the participants, sharing insights on innovation, sustainability, and community development.
By transforming an invasive aquatic plant into a valuable economic resource, the initiative continues to promote environmental sustainability, skill development, entrepreneurship, and community empowerment, creating meaningful opportunities for inclusive growth and improved livelihoods.
